Heart warming/breaking little frame story about a girl learning about her late granddad’s fight in the Spanish Civil War through letters and diary entries in an old dusty trunk.

It’s a valuable history lesson about the anarchist experiments in mid-30s Spain and how they were crushed from within and without.

Fuck Franco and all the so-called Western democratic countries who looked the other way while fascist Germany and Italy flew over European airspace and U.S. companies illegally supplied oil and intelligence.

And fuck Stalin and his sabotage of the POUM for his small-minded nationalist interests. He showed he’d rather disarm, torture, and kill revolutionaries than fall out of favor with his bourgeois bedfellows.

Land and Freedom is dramatized proof that Trotsky was right. Given the reality that every socialist revolution will be followed by attacks from hostile powers, permanent revolution and not socialism in one country is the only path to lasting change.

Loach is doing a rare public service by getting these ideas out there in narrative form.
