ALTMAN

2014| DIRECTED BY RON MANN

Kanopy sucked me into another film-about-filmmaker(s) film.

Pretty surface level quantity-over-quality let’s rush through every home movie he ever did feel. They spent like five seconds on 3 Women with zero Altman commentary.

The filmmaker also kept asking all these actors “What does Altmanesque mean to you?” and nothing else. They all gave boilerplate answers like “fearless” or “expect the unexpected” whereas there’s an objective answer and it is ensemble-cast satires with people talking over each other, but I digress.

They did do a good job on his biography, from young military man to old heart transplantee. His wife gives lots of fun commentary as do his kids.

Most touching moment is when one of his boys said at the end of his life Altman loved getting his family together and just watching everybody, as if he realized he was living in his own movie and he loved the cast.

Take it or leave it though, ultimately I think I’d rather just watch Altman himself talk.
