THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY

2006 | DIRECTED BY KEN LOACH

If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers.

Ken Loach is not only a filmmaker but a scholar. I’ve watched three of his films now and he knows his stuff.

James Connolly’s above warning is such an impactful quote to air in the lead-up to the dispiriting 1921 treaty and its bloody aftermath.

Loach thinks to include it because he’s spent a lifetime working within the theory and practice of class struggle.

Media like this offering a historical analysis of world events through a stubbornly proletarian lens are so necessary in the ongoing battle of ideas — it is propaganda in the best sense of the word.

We need more Loaches.
